PROJECT OVERVIEW
Ollie is a unique app designed to boost children's confidence through audio-positive reinforcements paired with toys. Our client asked for a brand guide, a logo, and a high-fidelity prototype that could be seamlessly handed off to an app developer.
They gave us complete creative freedom with no templates or guidelines, starting from scratch with just a few keywords: fun, magical, clean, positive, and friendly.
01: Research & Inspiration
Market Analysis
We began by identifying the app's primary purpose: utilizing the audio function. Drawing inspiration from popular audio-based apps like Headspace, Duolingo, and Spotify, we aimed to create a familiar, simple audio app.
Moodboard
Next, we created mood boards based on the client's keywords. After researching children's apps, I curated a warm-toned mood board for a friendly, welcoming feel. The client selected my mood board as the final visual theme.
I then chose primary fonts to capture the desired essence and designed a balloon-themed logo symbolizing youthfulness and enjoyment.
02: Planning
FEATURE ROADMAP
Before sketching, I conducted a detailed comparative and competitive analysis.
Using my findings, I created a feature roadmap outlining must-have features requested by the client, highly recommended features, and surprising, delightful additions.
This roadmap organizes all MVP features.
03: User Flow + Solution Sketching
Based on the MVP, we created a user flow outlining all accessible features to guide our solution sketches.
After meeting with the client and receiving clear feedback, we identified likes and dislikes and moved forward with a clear direction. With feedback, we implemented the following main features into our app:
+ Built-in Bluetooth pairing option
+ Highlighting the lyric being played
+ Day/Night audio distinction
+ Premium Mode (Payment Option)
+ Custom audio recordings
+ Skills progress bar
Other changes we made:
Moved the Skills Bar from Profile to the Home page
04: Low-Fidelity Wireframes
04: Testing, Testing, Testing 🔬
Played with color schemes of pages
Added payment page for In-App purchases
Animated the onboarding page
Snippet of drafting our feature pages:
Created the Toy’s Progress Bar
05: High-Fidelity Wireframes
06: Prototype
07: Outcome & Reflection
← NEXT PROJECT: BOSTONHACKS
We began drafting the initial layouts for the four pages in the nav bar: Home, Favorites, Affirmations, and Recording.
Home: Displays a skills bar to track progress, the currently playing audio, and the scheduled playlist. Guardians can set the next day’s schedule and monitor completed affirmations.
Affirmations: Allows guardians to create folders for organizing recordings and select them as daytime or nighttime audio.
Favorites: Shows selected audio from the affirmations page with day and night tabs for easy viewing.
Recording: Features a UI similar to the classic iOS recording page, where users can listen to current audio and record their own. This unique feature sets Ollie apart.
Distinguished Non-Premium & Premium Pages
Created Night vs Day Audios
After delivering our final prototype, we received positive feedback from our client, who then passed it to an app developer for the development phase. In three months, we successfully designed a functional and scalable prototype as Phase 1 of this project. Future enhancements will include creating compatible physical toys for Ollie.
Working with a real client for the first time was an invaluable learning experience. I improved my wireframing and prototyping skills while sharpening my communication, time management, teamwork, and feedback abilities. This project offered a well-rounded learning journey, expanding both my technical and interpersonal skills.
