PROJECT OVERVIEW

My team participated in Catalyst: a virtual, UI/UX designathon that aims to challenge participants to explore how design, innovation, and community interact. In roughly 36 hours, our team collaborated to solve a design challenge and build an app prototype that addressed a modern-day problem.

The Problem

In a world where people are looking for authentic dining experiences, it can be difficult for local businesses to stand out & for consumers to find and trust them. Many review platforms have unreliable ratings and reviews, making it challenging for users to make informed decisions about where to eat.

The Solution

A community-driven app where authenticated users share dining experiences, fostering a positive community of food enthusiasts who appreciate diverse cultures. Local businesses can showcase their authenticity transparently, allowing users to discover and share their experiences.

01: Research

GOAL

I wanted to understand the top issues consumers have trying to find authentic restaurants, and what could help enhance their experience and get them to engage more deeply with online review platforms.

To do this, I used the following strategies.

Top Research Insights

User Persona

FEATURE ROADMAP

Based on the research, I needed to include features in the app that would provide more information about the restaurant and food, in a way that allows for interaction with the verified reviews, the user, and other users.

This table organizes all of the features of an MVP.

02: Solution Sketching

Before jumping into low-fidelity wireframes, we began by sketching out concepts and ideas.

Here, we clearly defined the challenges to address: achieving user authentication, creating an easily accessible feed, and personalized filters.

03: Low-Fidelity Wireframes

Next, we drafted the initial layouts for the four main pages in the navigation bar.

To make these wireframes intuitive, familiar, fun, and easy to use, we drew inspiration from popular food rating platforms like Yelp and Beli, as well as dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble.

Search: Offers a dropdown menu for location and cuisine preferences, and a search bar for specific restaurants or user profiles. Recommendations based on reviews aid in decision-making.

Collection: Allows users to create and contribute to folders to save restaurants and view collections from people they follow.

Home: Aggregates reviews from followers and verified users. Users can browse, identify verified accounts, and engage by reacting and sharing thoughts.

Profile: Displays the user's and followers' recent activities. Features include adding a bio, selecting cuisine preferences, accessing the authentication program, adjusting settings, and creating folders.

After the mid-fidelity phase, we experimented with various typefaces and colors to define Authentica’s identity.

We selected trendy, accessible typefaces and a logo with a checkmark to reflect the app's purpose. We chose red and yellow for the color palette because yellow evokes comfort, while red stimulates hunger and impulsivity.

Finally, we further tinkered with our wireframes after user-testing and identified issues such as the reaction icons being too small, confusing navigation, and where to find more information about the restaurants.

METHODOLOGY

+ Market research
+ Competitor analysis
+ Survey
+ Consumer Interviews

07: Prototype

08: Outcome & Reflection

04: Iterate & Implement

06: High-Fidelity Wireframes

Out of 34 teams all over the nation, Authentica placed third.

As this was my first time creating an app from conception to completion, this personal project was a huge learning experience. I learned the iterative design process and the overall process of user research from persona to usability testing.

What’s next for Authentica?

I want to research other ways of “authenticating” our users of cultural backgrounds. I want to incorporate coupon deals and possible partnerships with these local restaurants to reward our users who contribute strongly to our app.

Though we tried our best, if we could redo the project, we'd perform more usability tests on the phone screen to gain more accurate insight and create multiple layouts of prototype apps to have a broad array of designs tested against one another.

USABILITY TESTING

So, what was the verdict?

After conducting a usability test, as well
as discussing my design with peers,
these were the primary changes that
I implemented:

05: Brand Identity

CHANGES

+ Added an app description on the onboarding splash pages

+ Made the map on the “list” view of search less opaque

+ Added options to make a reservation, report, call, or get directions to a restaurant

+ Added a scrollable activity line on “recent activities” on the profile page
