50 ITERATIONS

TOOLS: ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR, PHOTOSHOP, LASER PRINTER

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Inspired by Paul Rand's poster designed for the Advertising Typography Association of America, I created 50 unique designs that captured the essence of New York City and transformed them into collectible NYC MTA cards. These physical cards showcased New York's vibrant cultures, featuring iconic songs, artists, and buildings through QR codes. I then took these cards to New York to see them in action, adding an interactive dimension to the project.

01: Design

The initial step involved breaking down Paul Rand's poster into fundamental shapes that could serve as the basis for my 50 designs. This task was challenging, given the poster's minimalist and modern aesthetic, which offered limited design elements. I had to think creatively, considering the typography itself as shapes, to ultimately curate 50 designs that I was satisfied with.

02: Laser-Printing

I printed the cards on durable, two-layer plastic using a laser printer. I then designed the fronts and backs on sticker paper and meticulously applied them to the cards. To add an interactive touch, I incorporated QR codes on the cards, linking to multimedia content that highlighted the vibrant cultures of New York. This content included iconic songs, artists, buildings, and more, offering an immersive experience for the recipients.

03: Presentation

The most exciting part was bringing the cards to New York City to see them in action! As I took documentation photos, security guards, commuters, and even police officers complimented the cards.
